JR Kyushu is the main passenger train operator on the island of Kyushu and operates a variety of trains. Kyushu being mainly rural has a lot of non electrified rural lines operated by diesel railcars, and it also operates variety of electric multiple units in and between urban areas together with Limited Express Trains.
TS Japan Rail recently did a rail tour that included Northern Kyushu (Kokura, Oita, Kumamoto, Fukuoka) and below show a selection of pictures from that tour.

Not included in these pictures is the Steam Locomotive operated by JR Kyushu (58-654 SL Hitoyoshi, currently running on the Kagoshima Main Line between Kumamoto and Tosu on operational days) and the Kyushu Shinkansen (and from Sept 2022 the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen will start operations between Takeo Onsen and Nagasaki).
We recommend Kyushu as a destination for rail fans. from the busy urban area of Fukuoka, (where you can also get a good view of Hakata Shinkansen Depot), to Kumamoto and Kagoshima with their trams (street cars) and the many scenic rural lines. there are also a number of interesting tourist trains.
